K-Pop scores gold in RIAJ certifications

K-Pop groups SHINee and KARA have taken Japan by storm, earning several gold certifications from the Recording Industry Association of Japan or RIAJ. The RIAJ awards certifications based on the number of copies an album has sold.

South Korean boy group SHINee earned an RIAJ gold certification for their fifth Japanese single “Dazzling Girl” which was released last October and has already sold 100,000 copies. SHINee held their first solo concert in Hong Kong last month and is scheduled to hold concerts in Singapore and Thailand this November. “Electric Boy”, the seventh Japanese single from the k-pop girl group KARA, was certified gold as well, having shipped 100,000 copies after its release also last October. Meanwhile, Japanese boy band Arashi earned a triple platinum for their album “Popcorn”, which sold 750,000 copies. J-pop group Kanjani8 also got a platinum for having sold 250,000 copies of their “8EST” album.
